Congratulations to Grand Prize Winner Justin Merritt for his composition "River of Blood" and to Amy Kazandjian for her composition "Armemorium" which won an Honorable Mention and a performance at this year's festival! The GrassRoots Festival Chamber Orchestra and Tabula Rasa announce the 2009 GrassRoots Festival Chamber Orchestra Composition Contest. A prize of $500 will be awarded to the composer of the winning work, which will be performed at the 2009 GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg, NY. All materials must be RECEIVED by April 1st, 2009. The winner will be announced in May; performance materials will be due by June 1st. Composition specifications • 5-10 minutes in length • Instrumentation: 2222-4231-str-timp+2 (keep percussion requirements modest; pieces with harp or piano cannot be considered) • Compositions which reflect humanitarian and/or environmental values are encouraged. About the Orchestra The GrassRoots Festival Chamber Orchestra is a semi-professional ensemble which gathers once a year for this event. It holds three rehearsals and performs an hour and a half concert within the same week. The orchestra performs on the last morning of the four-day festival on an outdoor stage which has a roof, but is not a band shell; it is amplified by area microphones. About Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa is an Ithaca, NY based organization that supports the performance of works by local composers. The board is comprised of professionally trained musicians and composers who will serve as the selection committee for this competition. About the Festival The GrassRoots Festival has become a nationally recognized event, unique in its focus on traditional and contemporary roots music. The festival is presented over a four-day period (Thursday-Sunday) on four stages accommodating more than 60 performing ensembles. Sunday morning features the GrassRoots Festival Chamber Orchestra, the only “classical” ensemble to perform at the event.
